Why the name King's Garden?

Print

The name King’s Garden comes from the Icelandic word Konungsgardur. This word was used in some of the old Icelandic sagas. The hero would pursue adventures during the summer months, and when fall came, he had to decide if he would go back to Iceland or stay in Norway with the king? If he stayed with the king during the winter months, he stayed in King's Garden*, the place where the king lived. If you stayed there, you ate at the king’s table. The servants of the king lived there and it was assumed they were ready to do battle for the king.

At the King’s Garden Leadership School, this means:

  • We are a school that makes Jesus our king. We serve him—we are His disciples. We want to fight for Jesus.
  • We are like a garden—a place where many different plants can grow. The goal for this school is to grow leaders who each have their own unique call from God.

*This idea of a garden fits very well with the ConneXions model (see http://www.leadersource.org). The ConneXions model is not a program but rather a tool to create a controlled environment for growth. This is precisely what a garden is.
