Konungsgarður is an Icelandic word. Literally it means “king’s garden.” This name has several interesting connections. It was used in some of the Old Icelandic sagas. The hero would go and ramble during the summer. When fall came, the question was: Would he go back to Iceland or stay in Norway with the king?
If he stayed with the king during the winter, he stayed in "Konungsgarði." Konungsgarður is the place where the king lives. If you stay there, you eat at the kings table. The servants of the king dwell there and it is assumed that they are ready to do battle for the king. This word is combined of two words: Konungs=King and garður=Garden. Using this word for the school is a good word picture for these things:
• A school that has Jesus as king. We serve him, we are his disciples; we want to fight for Jesus.
• A garden is a place of growth - different plants grow there. The goal for this school is to grow leaders who each have his/her unique call from God.
The mission of King's Garden is to build healthy and whole leaders for the kingdom of God who will serve Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit by responding to Gods call on their lives.
More on the mission statement:
• Whole and healthy leaders
o Leaders with whole and healthy character which obviously has been molded by Christ (Eph 4:143). The school will emphasize character growth. Knowledge without maturity is like a river without banks.
o Leaders who know their calling and competencies.
• For the kingdom of God
o To see progress in the kingdom of God we need people that listen to the voice of God and have the courage to go and act on it.
• Serve Jesus Christ
o The kingdom of God is not a democracy but a monarchy. We are called to serve and submit to Christ the King (Joh 15:5).
• In the power of the Holy Spirit
o For us to expand the kingdom of God we need to openly receive all what the Holy Spirit wants to give us.
• The call
o The call of God on our life is the primary way for us to act against the many anti-kingdom forces that operate in our context. Through the driving force of the call we will act counter culturally – pursuing what for others looks like rubbish but in Christ is glory, what for others looks like nonsense but in Christ is wealth of wisdom.
The vision is to see Icelandic leaders go out and take ground for Christ in Iceland and beyond by making disciples, planting churches and building more leaders according to the call that God extends to each and every one of them.
The core values of the school, in order of importance, are celebration, simplicity and multiplication.
